Jay Carder joins the Faux Poly family with debut EP 'Entropy'

It's a headsy blend of UK bass, techno and breakbeat

Jay Carder has released her debut EP via Faux Poly, 'Entropy'.

The record is a forward-thinking blend of UK bass, techno and breakbeat, reflecting the sounds often found in the artist's DJ sets in which she effortlessly weaves between sounds of techno, bass and garage.

It's a special release for both Carder and label Faux Poly, too: having linked up with label bosses Kassian many years ago, she has been working out of their studio in Hackney Wick to refine her sound and first release.

"We've been working with Josie (Jay) for a long time now, she's booked us before had her on her radio show, and always been a vocal supporter of what we're doing," says Joe, one half of Kassian. "Over lockdown I got more into teaching music production, and Josie approached me for some lessons - two years later and she's producing some fantastic unique music of her own."

"The idea of Entropy has always fascinated me," explains Carder. "The idea that the world is always degrading/moving into disorder and towards chaos. As humans we are always trying to actively stabilise this. Which feels like a good way of describing this EP.”

'Entropy' leads with a heavyweight techno club tool, 'Eva's Stoned', which incorporates rolling drum layers and vocal cuts pulled from late-night voice notes, which were the premise of the track:

"I started writing Eva's Stoned on a Sunday night straight after getting home from playing at Noisily Festival," Carder says. "Something just came over me and I was feeling so inspired and it kind of just wrote itself if I'm honest. I was in the studio until about 4am, left there buzzing and went straight back the next day and finished it off. It's mad because all of my other tracks so far have taken months to write and finish.

"My good friend Eva Crystal Tips sent me a voice note on the way in which made no sense – she apologised with 'sorry, I'm stoned' – and with that, the track's identity/hook was born."

It's the first of a slew of releases incoming from Faux Poly: with an overriding goal of establishing a close family of producers who make interesting, accessible and "rule breaking" new music, 'Entropy' continues things for the newly-launched label with its purpose at the forefront.

Since launching at the beginning of 2022, it's been a busy year: Kassian made their Berlin debut at both HÖR and Panorama Bar. Having had Jay onboard for their recent party at The Glove That Fits, the label's next party will take place at Pickle Factory on October 22 - find out more information here.
