Jamal Edwards’ mother confirms cause of death, launches Self Belief Trust in his honour

The multi-talented SBTV founder passed away following a cardiac arrhythmia in February

The mother of late music entrepreneur, TV personality, and DJ Jamal Edwards has confirmed his cause of death in a new statement.

Brenda Edwards, Jamal’s mother and panellist on the ITV daytime talk show Loose Women, released a statement this morning, June 7, confirming his death was caused by a cardiac arrhythmia.

"I have sadly learned that the cause of Jamal's devastating passing was due to cardiac arrhythmia caused by having taken recreational drugs,” she said.

“I wanted to address this myself to everyone who loved, admired and respected my son. Since finding out the news I’ve been in a state of shock, and I’m still trying to process it,” added Brenda.

Jamal Edwards passed away in February aged 31. The SBTV founder helped to launch the careers of Ed Sheeran, Skepta, Dave, Big Zuu, and more through his efforts in music.

The music entrepreneur was awarded an MBE, MBA, and PHD in his 31 years and created a channel that would go down in history as one of the key institutions for Black British music.

“It's so important to me that I do address [his cause of death] as no mother or any loved one should have to go through what Jamal's sister, Tanisha, and I have been through since he passed,” said his mother.

“Jamal inspired so many - working tirelessly to unite and to give a platform to countless people and communities across the UK,” she added.

In the wake of his passing, Brenda revealed a newly-launched trust in honour of the late entrepreneur. “With the recently launched Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust, we will continue to not only honour his name but to help those in need.

“The Trust is in place to help create a sense of community for young people, offering a safe space of their own to help develop their skills and explore who they are.”
