Ibiza’s government removes over 2,500 “illegal short-term rental listings” from Airbnb

A total of more than 14,500 beds have been removed as part of a crackdown on "illegal short-term rental listings"

Ibiza’s government has removed over 2,500 “illegal short-term rental listings” – totalling more than 14,500 beds – from holiday rental marketplace Airbnb.

According to Travel Daily Media, the move was made by the island’s ‘Illegal Short-Term Rentals Taskforce’ and travel data company Mabrian in an effort to crack down on “non-authorised” housing listings.

Between July 2024 and September 2025, 2,831 listings were stripped from Airbnb, making up some 14,532 beds in total, causing a plummet in availability for holiday rentals on the White Isle.

Among listings removed include campervans, caravans, tents, and cabins in non-authorised campsites, and those who fail to provide “legitimate” licensing for rentals.

The clampdown was first announced in February by Ibiza officials, who revealed that a deal had been struck with Airbnb to fast-track the removal of properties that “operate on the margins of legality.”

El Diario reports that, while Ibiza officials are celebrating the move, hosts are still finding ways around new tourist housing regulations, listing cars, boats, and other rentals on the site.

Despite Balearic president Marga Prohens claiming that Ibiza is now “100% free” of unlicensed accommodation, El Diario discovered a listing on Airbnb for a van with a mattress in the back, advertised for over €125 per night.

The listing description reportedly reads: “It's a diesel manual car with a bed inside and no rear windows, which means you can blend in unnoticed. I recommend parking in the forest away from the city.”

The removal of “illegal” short-term listings comes amidst Ibiza government’s pledge to crackdown on overcrowding on the island, having recently implemented regulations such as the ban of the sale of alcohol between 9:30PM and 8:AM in party areas, and up to £2,500 fines for those drinking publicly.

Vicent Marí, president of the Consell Insular d’Eivissa, celebrated the latest crackdown, saying: “Ibiza is the first destination in Spain to have fully removed illegal short-term rental listings from the Airbnb platform,” (via TDM).
