Bar floor collapses in Hackney Wick leaving 13 people injured

Firefighters rescued seven people who were trapped after the collapse

Emergency services were called Saturday after the mezzanine floor Hackney Wick bar Two More Years collapsed leaving 13 people injured.

Firefighters helped rescue seven people who were trapped under the rubble with four people taken to hospital after being called to the scene at 4:44PM.

"Everything was crushing me, I was starting to lose breath," witness James Purdon to BBC News.

"It got to the point where I couldn't even cry for help because I had no energy left.

"I feel like I had seconds left of consciousness before someone managed to clear a passage for me to escape."

After he was rescued, he said he was “in so much pain” that he couldn’t move and that he believes he was the most seriously hurt of the victims, with injuries to his back, knee and ankle, but no broken bones.

The London Ambulance Service declared it a major incident and tweeted: “Three patients had potentially serious injuries and 10 had more minor injuries. We took four people to hospitals and major trauma centres.”

Two More Years have posted on Instagram the following statement: “At around 5:PM today, the mezzanine in our venue collapsed. Thankfully no one has sustained any critical injuries."

"This does mean the venue will remain closed for now and all dinner reservations and party bookings are cancelled. Our thoughts are with everyone that has been affected.”

Diane Abbott, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington has tweeted: "Alarming to hear that 13 people injured tonight after a mezzanine floor collapses at the popular Two More Years bar in Hackney Wick. Firefighters rescued 7 trapped people. 3 people seriously hurt, 10 more had minor injuries and 4 taken to hospital"
