Floating Points digs for vinyl at Amoeba Records and shares his finds
An eclectic selection of timeless music
London-based producer Floating Points, real name Sam Shepherd, recently took a trip to Los Angeles where he stopped off at Amoeba Records to dig for vinyl as part of the shops What’s In My Bag? Series.
Shepard possesses an eclectic taste in music and his selection leans more towards the jazz realm, but as he points out, much of the material he selects is versatile enough to be played in a club setting.
One of the first records Shepherd highlights is one by Pharoah Sanders titled ‘Love in Us All’, which features the track ‘Love is Everywhere’. It’s a jazzy ballad spanning nearly 20 minutes, but with enough kick to stir up a dancefloor, it's no surprise that it's a record which he used to play regularly at the now defunct London club Plastic People.
Other highlights from Shepherd's dig include the classic ‘Take Me I'm Yours’ by Mary Clark, ‘Leaving this Planet’ by Charles Earland and The Edge of Daybreak’s ‘Eyes of Love’, a soulful record that was actually recorded by inmates at the Virginia State Penitentiary.
