Craig Richards won't be playing every week at fabric in 2018

"Craig is still the cornerstone of the club," say fabric

Craig Richards has revealed in an interview with Crack he’s planning to step down from his weekly Saturday residency at fabric next year.

He’s held the residency since 1999, but taking time out during its temporary closure last year made Richards feel he needs to expand his horizons. He’ll still play at the London nightspot, but on a less regular basis.

He said: “[Fabric’s closure] made me go out and play at different venues in London and around the country. I’ve learned my craft by a very lengthy apprenticeship at fabric, but the closure made me realise it’s important to be able to transpose that to other venues big or small.

"I'm enjoying playing there more by playing there less, and next year I'm going to start a specific night, but I won't have a weekly residency any more.

"It feels really natural. It's a bit like a relationship where you're more in love when you see each other every so often. Perhaps."

Regarding Richards' move away from weekly slots, fabric told Mixmag: "Craig is still the cornerstone of the club. Throughout this year he's had a number of other commitments that have meant he's played here less often, but he is still very much our resident. Craig won't be playing for us every weekend in 2018, but we're currently working on an exciting new monthly project as part of a new chapter in his residency."

One of the projects Richards launched following fabric’s temporary closure was Houghton festival: “Last year when fabric closed, it became a calling for me to do the festival. It certainly wasn’t something I’d been thinking about before,” he said.
