Brits need to drink 124 pints each to save UK pubs

Punters will need to spend £382 each to save the nation's pubs

Finance experts have claimed that Brits will need to drink 124 pints each to save the nation’s watering holes this year.

With 40,000 pubs across the UK, finance experts have stated that around £25.66 billion will be needed to boost the industry and generate the same cash flow as the levels sat pre-pandemic.

That would be the same as drinking 124 pints, 122 glasses of wine, or if you’re peckish - 976 bags of crisps or 40 roast dinners per person. Pubs have opened for business indoors as of today, May 17, for the first time since November.

Finance experts Company Debt stated, “with the latest estimates suggesting that the UK’s food and beverage industry lost at least £25.66bn due to Covid-19, we wondered how much every person in the UK would need to spend in order to reach pre-pandemic levels.

“Based on a figure of 52 million in the UK, the average pub will need each customer to spend an additional £382 this year to combat the impact that Covid has had on the sector.”

Campaigners have come up with a “Your Local Pub Needs You” poster, urging punters to support their local pubs and bars which are now under economic pressure. The poster states that the average pub will need each customer to spend an extra £382 in 2021, adding: “Thank you for doing your bit!’’

Company Debt also stated that 2,500 pubs have shut down during the pandemic, while many venues, bars and clubs have also shut during the lockdown period. A £2.5 billion rent crisis threatens the closure of venues across the country as 75% of those are now facing bankruptcy.
