Berlin’s far-right party withdraws request for Berghain to be shut down
The AfD has distanced itself from Sibylle Schmidt's letter
A few days on from submitting a request for Berghain’s trade license to be withdrawn, Germany’s far-right political party AfD has now withdrawn its own request.
The request was submitted by Sibylle Schmidt, who sits as an independent politician for the AfD on the district council.
Frank-Christian Hansel, a founder of the Berlin AfD, has distanced the party from the request, saying Schmidt is not a party member and does not speak on the behalf of the party, calling her request a “personal” one.
A spokesman for the AfD state association, Roland Gläser, echoed his Hansel’s statement, saying "The AfD is not a prohibition party”, reports Berliner Morgenpost.
