BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend to take place in Luton this year

Proposals for the three-day event in Stockwood Park were submitted by Leeds and Reading operator, Festival Republic earlier this month

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend will be taking place in Luton this year, organisers have announced.

The festival is set to run across May bank holiday weekend at Luton’s Stockwood Park, marking the first time the festival has been held in Luton — as well as the first to take place across three days.

Headliners have yet to be announced, but last year the festival in Dundee saw the likes of Jamie xx, Jayda G, Rudimental and more on the line-up.

The festival will run across four stages, the Radio 1 Stage, Radio 1 Future Sound Stage, Radio 1 Dance Stage and the BBC Music Introducing Stage.

Luton Council leader Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE told Rolling Stone UK: “The fact that BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, one of the UK’s largest and most popular music festivals, has chosen Luton is fantastic news for our town, especially our young people, and will showcase all the wonderful things about Luton.

“Not only will this event give a multi-million pound boost to Luton’s economy and provide a number of opportunities for local young people and businesses, with tens of thousands in attendance and millions tuning in across the BBC, it gives us an opportunity to step forward and showcase the very best of our ambitious, brilliantly vibrant, wonderfully diverse and transforming town.”

Earlier this month, Reading and Leeds festival operator Festival Republic revealed it would be running a festival in Luton.

Festival Republic has since confirmed that the festival proposal for Stockwood Park across the May bank holiday was to host BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.

No ticket sale date has been confirmed however, 100,000 will be up for grabs.
