Explosion in Baku nightclub kills at least one and injures over 30

The club in Azerbaijan's capital reportedly suffered from a gas leak

An explosion happened in a nightclub in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, early Sunday, causing a fire that killed one person and wounded 31 others.

Associated Press reports that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, and investigations were ongoing.- citing Interior Ministry spokesperson Ehsan Zahidov.

Parviz Abubekirov, a spokeswoman for the health ministry, said 24 individuals had been hospitalised.

Firefighters were summoned to the club in the city centre around 3:AM, according to the emergency services, and the fire was put out before it spread.

Outside the club, which looked to have been extensively damaged by the explosion, videos released on social media showed hundreds of people in a panic, some of them injured.

Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim tweeted: Very sad news about casualties as a result of explosion at the club downtown Baku. My condolences and prayers.
