Venetian Snares’ Aaron Funk returns with first solo release in 11 years

The single lands as part of Planet Mu’s 30th anniversary compilation

Canadian producer Aaron Funk – otherwise known under his Venetian Snares alias – has released his first solo single in more than 11 years.

‘Drums’ landed on Tuesday, March 18, as the first single from Planet Mu’s 30th anniversary compilation, which features 25 tracks from artists across the label’s roster and beyond.

The new single sounds recognisably like Venetian Snares’ early work, packed with 808 snares, modular synthwork, and frenetic break samples.

The full Planet Mu V/A is set to land on May 9, celebrating 30 years since the label first launched in 1995, with a feature from label founder Mike Paradinas – AKA µ-Ziq.

Other artists who feature on the compilation include Jlin, Traxman, Slikback, RP Boo, DJ Manny, Jana Rush, DJ Girl, Luke Vibert, Elmoe, and many more.

Planet Mu continues to carve its own unique and exciting path, proving that electronic music remains some of the most intriguing and challenging work today, always slightly outside the relentless churn of the dance music industry,” reads a description.

“It's a fleet-footed label whose artists look towards the future; yet echoes of Planet Mu’s past—ranging from jungle, dubstep and glitchy hip-hop to banging techno, electronica and breakcore—still resonate through its new generation of talent."

Elsewhere, the label announced two 30th anniversary parties set to go ahead in London and Berlin respectively this spring. The first will take place on May 3 at London’s Corsica Studios, the second at Berlin’s Silent Green on June 21.
