Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg sample song from UK learning disabilities charity

The pair surprised the London charity with the release of their new track ‘Outta Da Blue’

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg have surprised a small UK charity by sampling a song they created in their new collaborative single, ‘Outta Da Blue’.

The pair sampled the track ‘Watermelon Fantasy’ on their November-released single, which originally appeared in the first EP by London-based learning disabilities charity Daylight Studios, released in 2018.

The original track was produced by the charity’s founder and a trustee of Daylight Studios, and performed by three artists with learning disabilities.

One of the featuring artists on the track, Tina Bruins, told The Guardian that she was unaware the song was being sampled by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, and was “shocked” to hear the news. “I thought it was a fantasy,” she said.

Proceeds from ‘Outta Da Blue’ are being split between the three featuring artists and the charity itself, which provides those with learning disabilities personalised music sessions where they can create, record, and release their own music.

In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, the producer of the original track, Olly Price, said that he hoped Kanye West would one day sample the song and “turn it into a global phenomenon”.

“It was a good shock because it sort of proves I make good music,” Bruins said after learning that Dre and Snoop had sampled the track. “I remember being like: ‘Whaaaaaat?’. I’m proud of [‘Watermelon Fantasy’] because Snoop Dogg took it over.”

‘Outta Da Blue’ was released in November, and appeared on Dre and Snoop’s new collaborative record, ‘Missionary’. Since its release, the track has been featured in a trailer for the Netflix film Back In Action, and appeared in the new American football-based video game Madden NFL 25.
