15 photos of Italy's abandoned nightclubs

A glimpse into the country's bygone disco era

Italian photographer and filmmaker Domenica Melillo has shared details of her documentary titled Discotex, which chronicles her adventures exploring the forgotten treasures of Italy’s disco-era nightclubs.

During the 80s and 90s Italy was booming with disco and the culture surrounding it. At the time, many lavish nightclubs and venues were established for the public to revel in dance mania, but that time has come and gone, leaving behind eerie and deserted structures.

As a recent graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Discotex began as Melillo’s thesis. The project has since expanded, with Melillo traveling throughout Italy to locations like Turin, Milan, Reggio Emilia, Formia and Avellino.

Venues highlighted in Discotex include Ultimo Impero, CafèSolaire, Marabù, 7Up, and East Side.
