Why has Instagram blocked the EDM hashtag?

Instagram has announced that it has banned users from hashtagging 'EDM' on their posts - wiping out all traces of the widely used '#EDM'.

Unlike Mr. Gallagher, Instagram hasn't got anything against the genre but #EDM apparently "violates their guidelines around nudity", an Instagram spokesman said.

In the full statement the company explained: "We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines. In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity.

"We're working on a way to more quickly restore certain hashtags that have previously been blocked. We're also working on ways to better communicate our policies around hashtags."

EDM related hashtags still exist such as #EDMVibes and #EDMLife so the genre hasn't lost its Instagram identity entirely. Bizarrely #EDMGirls remains so why has #EDM been censored?
