Mike Skinner of The Streets has claimed that their singleWho’s Got The Bag (21st June)’ has apparently been banned by BBC Radio 1.

The single was released in March, looking forward to the end of lockdown. Restrictions are set to be lifted on June 21, hence the track’s title.

His manager Tim Vigon elaborated a while later, saying “Career first! @mikeskinnerltd “Who’s Got The Bag” has been banned from Radio 1. What a time to be alive.”

Speaking about the song on release, Skinner spoke about the ethos behind the track, saying:

“It’s been too long since I’ve been behind some decks, or on a stage, in a tour bus sleeping in a bunk. The moment we can do it we want to be the rave and we will.

“It’s also about hospitality, events and nightclubs not being able to take anymore. It’s a protest song: it’s saying, don’t change the date on us again! FIRST IN THE ROOM. 21 June.”

The BBC has said it does not ban songs, while a remixed version of ‘Who’s Got The Bag (21st June)’ has been played on Radio 1 since the track was released in March.

Speaking to NME, a BBC spokesperson said:

“Each track is considered based on its musical merit and whether it is right for our target audience, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis.”
