​Ultra-Sonic frontman Mallorca Lee has died aged 51

Mallorca Lee, the DJ and frontman of famed Scottish electronic group Ultra-Sonic, has passed away aged 51.

Lee died on Sunday, February 4, following a short cancer battle. He revealed on social media just weeks prior that he had received a terminal diagnosis and was given just “a matter of months” by doctors.

His death was confirmed by a close friend of the late artist, DJ KID. “It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the sad passing on Sunday afternoon of legendary Scottish DJ, producer and long-time friend Mallorca Lee,” he wrote.

“[He] was diagnosed with terminal cancer just 4 weeks ago. He was 51. During this incredibly upsetting time, my deepest sympathy goes out to Maria Mallorca's wife, his children Angel and Oceano and his extended family and friends.”

His family shared a series of photos on Facebook yesterday showing Lee with his wife and children over the years, alongside a caption that reads: “We love you infinity, goodbye and safe trip.”

Mallorca Lee was best known for his work as part of the music group Ultra-Sonic, first formed in the early ‘90s between Lee and fellow bandmate Rodger Hughes. The pair went on to become one of the most successful Scottish dance music groups of their time.

During their tenure between 1991 and 1998, Ultra-Sonic released 14 singles, four studio records selling more than 50,000 copies in the UK alone, a live album, and two full-length tour videos, one of which famously outsold Disney's The Jungle Book.

After the group disbanded in the late ‘90s, Lee went on to produce under other aliases and joined British techno group Public Domain during their prime.

Lee revealed his cancer diagnosis on Facebook just last month. He explained: “I apologise for not telling all of my family and friends individually, it just breaks my heart a thousand times and I don’t have the strength to go through it all over and over again.”

“I love you all, the last 10 years have been the best of them all, it really has been wonderful," he wrote. "Love, that’s all we ever really have, our one true currency, so tell the ones around you what they mean to you, every day.”
