One person has died in Germany after a gunman opened fire in a nightclub in the city of Konstanz.

Three others were reportedly injured during the attack which took place at about 4:30am (2:30am GMT) on Sunday. The gunman was killed during the subsequent exchange of fire with local police, who said in a statement that special commando forces and a helicopter were deployed.

Witnesses told broadcaster SWR that a doorman appeared to have been shot with an automatic weapon as he tried to stop the attacker. One police officer was also wounded in the exchange of fire. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The gunman targeted the Grey club on Max-Stromeyer-Strasse. Police say they do not believe the attack is terrorism related. A spokesperson told N-TV that the gunman was a 34-year-old Iraqi citizen, but not an asylum seeker. He is believed to have lived in Germany for a long time.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
