New TV series on Mussolini will have "rave culture" aesthetic and "techno soundtrack"

An upcoming drama television series, M. Son of the Century, which depicts the rise to power of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, will have a “rave culture” aesthetic and backed by “kind of a techno score”.

The show will be directed by British BAFTA-winner Joe Wright, who helmed film 2017 Darkest Hour, which followed the early days of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister of the UK in the Second World War.

An early behind-the-scenes shot from the Sky Original drama shows a room with a crowd of men seated at tables dressed almost exclusively in head-to-toe black clothing.

Wright told Variety about the unconventional aesthetic and soundtrack in during a set visit. He said: “It’s not told in a verité style… [but] all of the facts of what happened, they’re all there.”

He went on to say that he will often play techno on set. “If I’ve got a big crowd with a lot of men, who are supposed to be full of testosterone and energy, then I might play techno, or I might play Black Sabbath.

“Music is very much an integral part of the process for me,” he continued. “And it’s a good way of communicating to the kind of periphery of the set, by which I mean craft services or whoever, that this is the atmosphere of the scene today.

“So if you put on some [The] Chemical Brothers or whoever, then it keeps the energy alive as well

Wright declined to comment on whether there would be any music by The Chemical Brothers in the television series's score, saying “I don’t know yet, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about that”.
