Tributes have been paid to Bristol's DJ Superfly

Around 200 people gathered in Bristol on Saturday to celebrate the life of DJ Superfly, whose real name was Mike Bernard.

The DJ was a key figure in Bristol’s music scene from the seventies to the eighties and also made his name as the first Black presenter on BBC Radio Bristol.

DJ, presenter, producer and father of four, Bernard passed away ages 69 on March 26.

Friends, family and leading figures in Bristol’s music scene are gathered together at the Rose Green Centre in Whitehall to celebrate his life Saturday night.

After rubbing shoulders with names such as Mary J Blige, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Gaye and Eddie Murphy, it's no surprise that tributes have been pouring in from people such as, Massive Attack's Daddy G to TV presenter Alex Beresford.

In the mid 90's he became a director at Kute FM and later achieved a law degree as a mature student.

The BBC spoke with Bernard’s son Narada who said, "first and foremost" he was an "amazing father”.

Narada - a former professional footballer - said his father taught him about "equality" and "where he came from”.

He added: "He was so proud of his roots and heritage and it was so clear he wanted us to understand that as well.

"I always knew my dad broke down boundaries.

"I knew he was not the average dad so to speak. That is not just me making that up, that is what people would say to me.

"The word people are using a lot is 'trailblazer'."
