Actor Bradley Welsh has been shot dead near his home in the West End of Edinburgh.

He appeared in Trainspotting 2 alongside Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner, playing the gang figure Mr Doyle.

The 42-year-old was also a former British boxing champion, winning the ABA lightweight title, and reformed football hooligan who once appeared on an episode of Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men. He was involved in charity projects in the Scottish capital, helping young people stay clear of crime by getting involved in his Holyrood Boxing Gym.

Irvine Welsh paid tribute to his “amazing and beautiful friend” saying his “heart is broken.”

He added: “Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way.”

Police Scotland said in a statement on Wednesday: “His death is being treated as suspicious and inquiries are continuing. Officers will continue to provide a high-visibility presence in the area to engage with the public, offer reassurance and gather information that can assist with this investigation.

“Anyone who believes they have any relevant information should contact police immediately.”
