Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has been granted bail after appearing in court earlier this morning (Monday, November 10), over charges of rape and sexual assault.
Westwood was charged with four counts of rape last month, and was also charged with nine counts of indecent assault and two charges of sexual assault against seven different women.
During an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today, the 68-year-old former DJ and broadcaster spoke only to confirm his name, address, and date of birth, Sky News reports.
Paul Goldspring, the Chief Magistrate, granted Westwood bail on the condition that he doesn’t contact prosecution witnesses. He was not required to enter pleas at this stage of the trial.
Westwood will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on December 8. According to Sky News, he has so far voluntarily attended five police interviews since the investigation commenced.
The ex-Radio 1 presenter is accused of offences against seven women, which include allegations of three indecent assaults at the BBC studios in the 1990s. All offences allegedly took place between 1983 and 2016.
Investigations into the allegations during Westwood’s 19-year career at the BBC were initially sparked by the BBC and The Guardian in 2022. Westwood has previously denied all allegations made against him.
In 2024, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was considering charges against Westwood due to a "file of evidence" submitted by the Metropolitan Police.
Investigations are currently ongoing, with the Met Police encouraging “anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone with information, to come forward.”
