Tim Deluxe
'The Radicle' (Strictly Rhythm)
9/10
Here's some transformation. Thirteen years ago, saddling the runaway stallion that was UK dance music, Tim Deluxe hit the Top 15 with his Latin-flavoured Ibiza anthem 'Just Won't Do'.
For the past half decade, though, he's surrounded himself with talented jazz artists. This isn't chin-stroking jazz, though; here it undulates and breathes, shape-shifting into 4/4 house, compelling you to dance.
The smoky 3am sax and locked groove of Tryin' Find A Way', 'Shanti's Alice Coltrane-style Eastern stoned spiritual and the hypnotic piano loop and freestyle blues trumpet of 'JAS' share something with acoustic techno mavens Brandt Brauer Frick and Ludovic Navarre's St Germain (especially the hammering, Rose Rouge-esque 'Feelings').
An impressive, warm-hearted and absorbing house LP.
