TikTok has announced the launch of its official Top 50 Charts with Billboard.

Music from the platform is measured on its “creations, video views and user engagement”.

The TikTok Billboard Top 50 marks the first chart to monitor the popularity of music on the social media platform.

Currently, the charts are only ranking music in the US with Sexyy Red’s ‘SkeeYee’ sitting at the top spot.

Other tracks in the charts - which refreshes each week - include Doja Cat’s ‘Paint The Town Red’, Ice Spice’s ‘Deli’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘August’.

Previously, many songs have made a resurgence through the app such as Kate Bush’s 1985-released single 'Running Up That Hill' which reached No. 1 in the UK charts last year after gaining popularity through Netflix’s Stranger Things and TikTok.

This week, Dazz Band’s 1982 release ‘Let It Whip’ has made it into TikTok Billboard Top 50 as the track has regained popularity along with country tracks from Zach Bryan and Tim McGraw as well as songs from R&B artist Charlie Wilson and emo band Pinegrove.

Global head of Music Business Development at TikTok, Ole Obermann said: “TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, and each week our passionate community of music fans drives songs onto the Billboard charts”.

He added: “It therefore made perfect sense to partner with Billboard to create the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. The chart gives a clear picture of the music that is being listened to on TikTok, and consequently starting to trend on DSPs and other services.”
