TikTok has taken to social media to tease its new music streaming platform, TikTok Music, rumoured to be a subscription service set to rival giants Apple Music and Spotify.

Across social media platforms, a series of verified profiles have appeared under the username TikTok Music — all along with a cryptic statement: “a new way to experience music”.

Pages for countries such as Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand and Singapore have been spotted on Twitter and Instagram.

The streaming platform is set to rival Spotify and Apple Music, and according to Music Tech, will be developed by existing subscription-based music streaming service Resso, which is currently available in India, Indonesia and Brazil.

Music Tech also reports that TikTok has opened up roles in the TikTok Music team including an advertising job that includes the requirement of working on “a music app for Gen Z that launched [in] 2020 in India, Indonesia and Brazil”.

Earlier this year Business Insider reported that a US trademark application was filed by the parent company of TikTok, ByteDance for TikTok Music — describing it as a “mobile app” that allows users to “purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics.”

ByteDance also revealed in the application that those with the app would be able to “live stream audio and video interactive media programming in the field of entertainment, fashion, sports, and current events.”

In March, TikTok launched a new music marketing and distribution platform SoundOn — where musicians can upload tracks directly to TikTok and then distribute it out to other streaming platforms.

Neither TikTok, nor parent company ByteDance, have officially confirmed details of TikTok Music.
