Three men have been arrested after a 32-year-old woman was stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival in London over the weekend.

The woman, who was with her child at the time of the incident, was attacked on Sunday, August 25, on the opening day of the famous annual street festival.

One man aged 20 was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder, the BBC reports, while two other men aged 22 and 24 were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

According to the BBC, the woman remains in critical condition in hospital. She was thought to have been caught up in an altercation between two groups of men when she was stabbed.

“The 32-year-old woman stabbed on Sunday remains in a life threatening condition,” the Met Police said. It’s currently unclear if the woman was known to those arrested, investigators have said.

The Met Police’s spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival, Cdr Charmain Brenyah, said that these arrests are “a significant step in the investigation”.

“They are the result of a determined effort by detectives who have worked around the clock to identify, locate and arrest these suspects.”

Notting Hill Carnival was attended by more than a million people a day from August 25 - 26. The event was largely peaceful, police reported.

"Hundreds of thousands of people came to Notting Hill Carnival today to enjoy a fantastic celebration," the Met Police said in a statement, adding that “the majority come to celebrate”.

Following the incident on Sunday, Cdr Charmain Brenyah said: "I’d like to acknowledge the incredible work of the officers, including police medics, who arrived so quickly - delivering emergency medical treatment and securing the scene to preserve vital evidence."
