The Idol has officially been cancelled by HBO after one season

The Weeknd’s controversial TV series, ‘The Idol’ has been cancelled after one season.

HBO has confirmed that the show - which was a co-created by The Weeknd, his longtime collaborator Reza Fahim and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson - will not have a second season.

Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Moses Sumney, Troye Sivan, BLACKPINK's Jennie and The Weeknd, the show had been highly criticised with Rolling Stone describing the series as “torture porn” and that it had gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails”.

Within this expose from Rolling Stone, anonymous “production sources,” said that making the show had been allegedly “plagued by delays, reshoots, and rewrites” with it being described as a “shit show”.

This “delay” was said to be down to Levinson taking over as director and rewriting and shooting the entire show according to 13 members of the show’s cast.

A review from The Guardian gave the show a one-star rating calling it “one of the worst programmes ever made”.

Whilst the show was airing, rumours began to circulate that the show would be cancelled even before its finale.

Today, HBO confirmed its cancellation. A spokesperson for HBO told Pitchfork: “‘The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response.”

The statement continued: “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

Earlier this month, The Weeknd announced the “final feature” of his career unless Daft Punk reunite.

Performing in Warsaw, Poland as part of his After Hours Til Dawn tour, The Weeknd -said that his final feature is set for release soon.

After the show, he took to Twitter to share a video from this moment with the caption: “The final feature… unless daft punk ever get back together”.
