The BPM Festival has cancelled its Brazil edition
The Portugal installment is still scheduled to go ahead
The BPM Festival has released another statement following the deadly shooting at Blue Parrot in January at the tail end of the event.
"Our hearts are broken by the loss of six wonderful lives that were cruelly cut short," the statement begins before naming all six victims killed during the shooting. "The dance floor is where people come together to share joy, be with friends, create memories, and celebrate life. While our festival and dance community have experienced a tragedy, we’d also like to remember the magical moments, new friendships, and beautiful landscape of Mexico that we’ve all shared over the last 10 years."
Further, the festival has announced its postponement of its Brazil expansion, which was announced during this year's BPM Festival and originally slated to occur in April 2017. It seems as though the organizers are still planning on moving forward with their Portugal edition, which was announced simultaneously and will take place later in the year in September.
Mexican officials have banned The BPM Festival from returning to Playa Del Carmen, where the event has taken place for 10 years.
Rafael Penaloza Vega, Giovanni Arturo Amparan Saragossa (both of Mexico), Daniel Pessina (Italy), Alejandra Villanueva (USA) and two security detail, Kirk Wilson from Canada and Geovanni Francisco Ruiz Murillo (Mexico) are the names of the victims. Kirk Wilson was a well-known member of the Canadian nightlife scene as a respected doorman. A GoFundMe has been set up in his honor to support his family.
