Sydney plans relaxation of stringent alcohol laws

Sydney’s nightlife has been suffering at the hands of strict regulations from the New South Wales state government in recent years, with alcohol bans and limits put on closing times.

These lockout laws have led to over 40 bars and clubs closing down, including beloved nightspot The Spice Cellar, and no new nightclubs or bars being allowed to open until 2017, with thousands hitting the streets to protest in response.

Now a slight reprieve is reportedly on the way, courtesy of the City of Sydney, with The Daily Telegraph reporting that Lord Mayor Clover Moore is planning to scrap 62 alcohol-free zones across the city, largely in suburb areas.

A meeting has been scheduled for next week, during which councillors will vote on the proposed lifting of the ban.

The NSW government also met with nightclub owners on the evening of March 31 to discuss the lockout laws, in a move that will provide hope for further relaxing of the harsh conditions.
