The man police believe was behind the Istanbul nightclub shooting, in which 39 people lost their lives, has been arrested.

The prime suspect, named as Uzbek national Abdulkadir Masharipov by media outlets, was captured by Turkish police and special forces in an apartment in the Esenyurt district of western Istanbul.

He had been on the run for two weeks and under police surveillance for five days prior to the arrests, according to reports, which state four others were also arrested, while his four-year-old son, with him at the time, is in protective custody.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the New Year's attack on Reina nightclub, calling it revenge for Turkish intervention in Syria.
