Steve Aoki is on the crew for first civilian space mission to the Moon

The first civilian space mission to the Moon is planned to take place next year, with American DJ Steve Aoki among the crew members.

The week-long mission is scheduled to fly on a rocket developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.

Every seat on the rocket was bought by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa in 2018, who vowed to provide “as many talented individuals as possible the opportunity to go”, in a lunar tourism and art project he titled the ‘dearMoon project’.

More than one million applicants applied to the project, with a final crew of eight selected to join Maezawa, as well as two backup crew members in reserve.

Two-time GRAMMY-nominee, Dim Mak founder and 'NFT futurist' Steve Aoki is among the winners to be selected for the primary crew.

“Since I was a little child I was dreaming of going to the moon. It's becoming more and more real every day. Still hard to believe but very excited and grateful for this amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To the moon!” he said.

Other crew members include K-pop Choi Seung Hyun, who goes by the alias T.O.P and is a member of the Big Bang boy band; Irish photographic artist Rhiannon Adam; and British photographer Karim Iliya.

Speaking about the project, Maezawa said: ““I'm very thrilled to have these amazing people join me on my journey to the moon and excited to see what inspiring creations they come up with in space.”
