Spotify seeks to add festival livestreams to platform

Spotify is looking to expand its video offering with live music and festival streams.

According to a report from Bloomberg published last week (June 8), the streaming giant has approached several major festival and music promoters in the hopes to expand its offering, which so far has featured a selection of live shows, including Dua Lipa in Mexico City.

While Spotify has already rolled out live audio from festivals, this would be its first major move into video streaming as part of a strategy to engage with "super fans" and move away from reliance on music licenses.

Last month, Spotify announced its new "reserved" programme, which rewards premium users with the opportunity to reserve concert tickets. A source told Bloomberg that Spotify is paying "tens of millions" to Live Nation to secure tickets.

Speaking to Music Business Worldwide following the announcement, Spotify’s Head of Music, Charlie Hellman, said: "This summer, when we start rolling out, we’ll be launching with Live Nation in a multi-year agreement, so that Spotify will be the exclusive music service that offers this kind of a benefit to its members."
