"Urban/house events" banned from London venue The Coronet
The license ruling follows violence apparently breaking out during a House Of Silk night at the venue
Historic South London venue The Coronet has been banned from hosting "urban" and "house" events, according to a report by London SE1.
The publication says the license revocation is a result of a "critical incident" involving 15 people at a House Of Silk event in the early hours of November 8.
With Southwark Police having to to call in 18 police units from neighbouring boroughs just after 4am, witnesses said they saw one man stabbed in the leg, a man threatening people with a hand gun and the use of a "noxious substance" such as pepper spray or CS gas.
Writing to Southwark Council, police licensing office Ian Clements requested a review of the venue's license: "It is clear from initial reports that there has been a significant failure in security procedures at this venue."
Instead of a full license removal now, the council has placed restrictions on the type of event that can go ahead, with a full hearing on The Coronet's license due to go ahead on December 8.
Garage Nation, which was due to celebrate its 18th birthday there on November 21, d'n'b night Breakin Science and Def:inition have all be affected by the ruling, with the latter two relocating to Great Suffolk Street Warehouse.
This news follows The Coronet's announcement that it will
close its doors permanently in January 2017 due to the continued gentrification of Elephant & Castle.
The Coronet was unwilling to comment on the matter when we contacted the venue.
