South African rapper Riky Rick - real name Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado - has passed away aged 34, his family reveal.

The Makhado family shared the news earlier today revealing that Rikhado died in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, February 23. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

"Son, husband, father, brother and uncle, Riky 'Ricky' Makhado (34) sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning (23rd February) in Johannesburg," said a statement released on behalf of the Makhado family.

"Affectionately known as Riky Rick across the globe, he was deeply loved by his family, friends and the entire entertainment industry,” the statement continued.

Riky Rick was also known as a songwriter, composer, actor, entrepreneur, and fashion designer on top of his rap career, with hit tracks such as ‘UNGAZINCISHI’, ‘You and I’, and ‘Stay Shining’. Riky was also part of the group Boyz N Bucks.

The rapper first shot to fame after the release of his ‘Nafukwa’ single in 2014, and shortly after, his debut album ‘Family Values’ went platinum. Riky later launched his own record label, Cotton Club Records.

“His love for family, friends, and community is well known. Riky's nurturing and developing of young musical talent is well documented and will forever be remembered," the statement continues,” his family added in the statement.

Last night, Riky shared his final message on social media tweeting: “I’ll return a stronger man. This land is still my home.”

The rapper has spoken publicly about suffering with depression in interviews previously, and in an interview in 2020, Riky opened up about finding himself on a "destructive path” after the passing of his father.

“He leaves behind his wife, two children, mother, and five siblings,” his family shared.

Tributes have been pouring in from South Africa and all over the globe for the late rapper.
