Six British ravers are reportedly in police custody after being taken away for drug tests during a party in China.

They were at a tunnel rave in Shenzhen on the outskirts of Guangdong on Sunday morning, according to the Guardian, when riot police turned up and demanded to drug test about 300 people.

Although 300 is the number quoted by witnesses, Chinese news agency Xinhua reports that 491 are under investigation, with 118 of them, six thought to be British citizens, testing positively for drugs. 93 are also thought to still be in custody.

British officials in China's capital city, Beijing, released this statement: “We are currently providing consular support to a group of British nationals detained in Shenzhen over the weekend.”

Those who were at the rave thrown by promoters The Real Deal described the scene when police showed up, saying "it was like a stampede". Police, armed with shields and batons, are also said to have ordered people to the ground as part of their crackdown on drug use.

Americans and Chinese citizens are also among those held by the authorities. See an image of the rave below.
