Richie Hawtin to launch new Japanese-themed pop-up venue in Lisbon

Richie Hawtin is set to open a new Japanese-themed pop-up venue in Estrela, Lisbon.

OURS is a collaboration with the legendary DJ's partner Laura Kaeding. In an Instagram post, Hawtin said that the idea for OURS was born from his and Kaeding's "fascination with Japanese craft and culture," with the venue set to feature "Japanese sake, green tea, art and craft exhibitions, music and more".

The venue will host its first exhibition from German artist Witold Riedel as part of the programme for Lisbon Design Week, which runs from tomorrow, May 28, until June 1.

The exhibition will allow visitors to sample green tea and sake from Reidel's Japanese ceramics, with Hawtin adding that the idea for the collaboration had come from the couple hosting the artist at their home and sampling sake, "enjoying how the taste and experience was heightened by using Japanese ceramics from our Japanese collection".

"The exhibition came together after a coincidental meeting with Witold, a multidisciplinary artist, who had just moved in the city as well," says Hawtin. "Witold has a great artistic intellect and a deep, sensitive interest in Japanese ceramics, which he’d been dedicating himself to for the last years."

Richie Hawtin is a long-time sake enthusiast, with brand ENTER.Sake having just launched a collaboration with Tokyo's WOMB nightclub to celebrate 25 years of the Shibuya-based nightspot.
