Berlin-based radio station Refuge Worldwide has launched a brand new radio mentorship programme running this year from September 4 until November 20.

Applications for the programme are open now, calling for aspiring radio broadcasters to get involved where they’ll learn “multiple aspects” of radio production.

The programme is put together in collaboration with the Supporting Act Foundation, and is set to be hosted by five Refuge Worldwide residents: Gabriel Gifford, Nicky Böhm, Two Thou, Monty Luke and ELLLL.

One-to-one mentorship sessions will be held between Refuge residents and mentees giving a “hands-on” experience in radio broadcasting from September to November.

“[The programme] is designed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between broadcasting experts from our radio community and aspiring radio hosts, with close one-on-one mentoring sessions giving participants ongoing support with their creative ideas,” reads the application.

Mentees will learn all aspects of radio production and broadcasting, including concept development, interview and research techniques, storytelling, DJing, audio production, and marketing.

Each of the five mentors involved will work closely with two mentees, making 10 applicants altogether. The application process is currently live now, encouraging consideration of “which mentor will be best suited to helping you get what you want out of the programme.”

Mentorship sessions last 90 minutes, and take place at Refuge Worldwide’s home in Neukölln, Berlin, on Mondays between 10:AM and 7:PM. The programme ends with a showcase to celebrate the work of all 10 successful applicants.

Last year, Refuge Worldwide and Zaatari Radio teamed up to launch a new recording studio in Amann, Jordan, delivering workshops for young people in marginalised communities. The studio opened in May 2022.
