Red Bull Studios in London has launched a new project called Normal Not Novelty which invites women to build lasting networks in the music industry with a series of workshops.

It kicked off in January and will take place monthly to encourage and inspire female DJs, producers, and sound engineers.

The sessions were inspired by female-fronted projects such as the PRODUCERGIRLS and Laura Marling’s Reversal Of The Muse, and will be hosted by industry professionals including our Impact artist this month, Madam X.

Madam X said: “I was really keen to get involved with these workshops. It's not unusual to come across a female DJ or producer but there's this stigma surrounding electronic music as being a bit of a sausage fest. It can intimidate women from getting involved. I've certainly had my fair share of 'didn't-know-women-could-mix' backhanded compliments.

“Celebrating the women who have already cemented their positions in the music industry and putting on these all-female workshops where the audience are encouraged to participate, and ask the questions they want to ask is an empowering thing. There are so many talented female engineers, DJs and producers out there, events like this will hopefully encourage more women to get involved and break down the barriers that look at 'women in music' as a novelty.”

The next Normal Not Novelty workshop will take place at Red Bull Studios on February 7 with Steph Marziano heading up the engineering workshop, Siobhan Bell running a DJ workshop and there will also be an electronic production workshop with Flava D.

The ticket ballot is now open, you can apply for the sessions here.
