Premiere: John Swing’s ‘Healing Tones’ is here to soothe your soul

Since the start of this decade John Swing has carved out a reputation as an analogue revivalist.

The London producer’s vinyl-only attitude on his and EMG's label LiveJam Records and its subsidiaries means his output comes in limited batches under numerous aliases. But that just leaves people thirsty for more.

In the past, he’s released breakbeat records as The Raw Interpreter on Warm Sounds, teamed up with EMG as Vinalog on Relative and formed an experimental band/label called Sperimentazioni Sonore.

Naturally, the vinyl aesthetic has trickled into Swing’s production. Recording everything through analogue instruments live, his productions are warm, raw and funky. This style’s impressed fellow live set maestro Mr G who appeared on Warm Sounds along with Ben Sims this year. Floating Points, Gerd Janson, Levon Vincent and Theo Parrish are among others who call themselves fans.

‘Assorted Moods’ is Swing’s first album and strays away from house and techno, bringing in heavy funk, jazz, hip hop and jazz influences over 10 tracks.

Those genres are represented on ‘Healing Tones’, a track glued together by Swing’s love of all things analogue. Crunching breaks, jazzy chords cut from Kool & The Gang’s ‘Summer Madness’ and a hazy lead all make up this a 10-minute looper of memories from summers past.
