Phace
'Monochrome' (Neosignal)
9/10
Easily the most incineratingly vicious dancefloor assault you'll suffer this month, Hamburg's arch tech pugilist Florian Harres serves up a warning on this album sampler that LP No 3 – next month's 'Shape the Random' – will yet again represent a seemingly impossible gear-shift upwards.
Quite where Phace's brain magics up the ever-multiplying layers of threshing sorcery which serrate the palette of this monstrous robo-tech whiplasher is beyond us. But what's crystal clear is that, currently, only Rockwell matches the balance of high-velocity production venom and controlled sonic texture on display here. Check the crazy filter panning before the drop and you'll know this is a studio ninja with rare skills.
Where others shade into wilful earbleed territory, Phace knits the broiling assault together with serious funk: temporary patchworks of spacious electroid rolling tech suddenly unveil as the track develops – before being fed back into the buzzsaw synth shredders once more. Monstrous.
