Nightclub bombing in Peru leaves at least 33 injured
Five people are said to be in "serious condition" following an explosion at Dalí nightclub in Trujillo last weekend
At least 33 people have been injured in a nightclub bombing in Northern Peru last weekend.
According to AP, the explosion occurred at Dalí nightclub in Trujillo on Peru's Northern coast in the early hours of Saturday morning (March 7). While AP has reported that "at least 33" were injured, Peruvian news outlet La República Noticias reports that number has now reached 40.
At least five of those injured are in "serious condition", Trujillo Health Network executive director Gerardo Florián Gómez told AP, with some victims having undergone surgery for shrapnel wounds and suffering amputations. At least three minors are among those injured, one 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds.
La República Noticias reports that the venue was hosting a performance from Mexican band Amor Rebelde at the time of the explosion. One witness told the publication: "I was enjoying the night with my friends when suddenly we saw something fall. I saw it and everything went blurry; my nose started bleeding horribly."
Another attendee who was left with glass embedded in her legs told reporters (via AP) that the blast “sounded as if the soundsystem had suddenly been turned off".
While authorities said it is unclear who is responsible for the bombing, the area is said to have been "plagued by violence" in recent months, including explosions at residential addresses in August and September that left more than 20 people injured.
According to La República Noticias, over 25 homes and businesses were also impacted by a powerful explosion after a handheld bomb was thrown at an event venue in Trujillo last month.
