Nicky Romero reveals anxiety made him want to quit music
The Dutch DJ has spoken more about his mental health struggle
After opening up about his anxiety last month, Nicky Romero has given an interview that provides a more extensive insight into the negative impact his mental health had.
Releasing less music as a result of his health, he revealed that there were times he pondered giving up on music altogether, laying the blame on the anxious thoughts that would go through his mind.
In an interview with
Billboard, he shared: "There were thoughts that I wanted to quit music, but I knew at the same time that it was not me. I was just the one observing the thoughts. I wasn't the thought itself. I could see that it was not me wanting to stop music, but rather this negative energy trying to take over.
"Music has always been my passion. I've never wanted to do anything in the world but music. The only thing that was holding me back was the fact that I just couldn't do it. I couldn't access my creativity energy and that was what was holding me back, it wasn't the music itself."
Citing David Guetta as someone who fully supported him through the most difficult times, he did reveal that others weren't as understanding.
"If I got invited in for a studio session, I would go but I wouldn't be able to perform at the level I normally perform at. It would be very hard for me to acknowledge that I couldn't perform at a certain level due to my symptoms and a lot of people did not understand. I was disappointing a lot of people and colleagues."
Nicky says his condition has improved since he took tips from Paul David book At Last A Life, and he's heading into 2016 with collaborations lined up with Nile Rodgers and a "really big band".
Romero followed Benga in revealing his mental health issues, with the latter hoping him sharing his problems would benefit the dance music industry.
