Nia Archives releases new Baile funk-inspired track, 'Baianá'

Nia Archives has returned with her first solo outing since March’s ‘Forbidden Feelingz’ EP, ‘Baianá’.

The new release samples traditional Brazilian choir Barbatuques' track of the same name, whose vocals are layered on top of a Bossa Nova, jungle, and Baile funk mashup.

“I’ve always been a massive fan of samba music, Bossa Nova music and Brazilian culture and had been a fan of the Barbatuques for a while,” Nia said on her latest release.

She went on to add that when looking through her Bossa Nova and samba playlists to find tracks to sample, ‘Baianá’ “stood out”.

“When I started making it, the original version was quite bouncy which I wanted to make harder… so I flipped it into this crazy amen break roller with a Reese bassline. I feel like this one really showcases my work and style as a producer,” she added.

‘Baianá’ arrives alongside a music video directed by Nia Archives herself, as well as long-time friend and collaborator Delphino. Watch it below.

“What a blessing & honour it was to make our 6th video together… in my home country too,” said Delphino on Instagram. “This is one of the most special videos we've ever made… spending time in Rocinha with some of the most beautiful, creative and pure souls ever.”

Earlier this week, the Mixmag cover star won big at this year’s annual AIM Awards ceremony, where she received an award under BBC Introducing’s One To Watch category against artists including Barry Can’t Swim, Jeshi, and Leá Sen.
