New York City allocates $500,000 in grants to women in the music industry
Applicants can earn up to $20,000 to support the creation of a new EP, album or music video
A new fund called The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre is now offering $500,000 in grants to female artists and music industry workers whose work "reflects the voices and perspectives of all who identify as women."
The initiative, which is funded by The New York Office Of Media And Entertainment (MOME) and administered via the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), is a three-year program with a total budget of $5 million that has recently finished its 2019 cycle.
Initially just sponsoring women in TV, film and theatre, the program has decided to add music as a category for its 2020 round of funding. The grant, which is looking for projects that feature a strong female perspective, extends to all areas of the music recording process, from producers to sound engineers.
Grants are broken into various categories and given a pre-determined amount of funding for each project that is accepted. The music category is capped at $20,000 per project and broken up into two categories: one for "classical, experimental, new music, jazz" and a second called "music general" for all other genres.
Applicants must be residing within one of New York City's five boroughs, cannot be represented by a music label and have a fan base and/or performance history. Read up on all the guidelines and requirements here.
Applications for the 2020 round of The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre opened yesterday and will close on October 1, 2019
