New music venue and record store, Grub Records officially opens in Sheffield

A new venue, record shop and wine bar - Grub Records - has opened in Queens Road, Sheffield.

The venue officially opened its doors on Friday (26 July), following several soft launch events in recent weeks - including a takeover from Mondo Radio - and is now open every Wednesday to Sunday.

The record store has been set up with the aim “to fill a gap in Sheffield’s dance music digging offering," and become a “worthy addition to the city’s wonderful scene” — adding to its thriving hub of “DIY music and culture”.

Some of those involved in the launch include Apricot Ballroom, Control, Groundwork, Footprints Jazz Club, Mondo Radio, and DJ duo Wow & Flutter.

Grub Records has also launched a Crowdfunder to try and raise £2500 to “hit the ground running”. The money raised will, “help us make the shop beautiful, and jump-start plans for the interior decorating, as well as stocking the shelves with as many killer records as they can fit.”

They continued, “Overall we’ve donated around £10k's worth of equipment, records, and cash, but helping us get up and running faster will mean a wider range of genres on the shelves from day one, allowing us to diversify the selection of styles available and create a space with something for everyone.”

The opening of a new record shop and venue is welcome news following a year of venue closures, which has seen an average of five independent music venues closing per week in the UK.
