DESIREE remixes Nina Simone
DESIREE has remixed Nina Simone for a new release via Verve Label Group.
The South African producer and DJ has put her own spin on Simone’s ‘Four Women’, an evocative exploration of misogynoir which weaves storytelling about oppression and generational trauma through the lens of four female African American characters.
Under DESIREE’s hand, the 60-year-old track keeps its stirring energy while weaving in atmospheric electronic elements and a rolling piano riff.
“There are songs that already say everything. Four Women is one of them. The deeper I got into Nina Simone’s world, the more I felt it speaking directly to me,” says DESIREE. “When I came to make this remix, I didn’t want to change what it meant. I just wanted to bring it somewhere new, somewhere you could move to it, lose yourself in it, and still feel every word.”
