New record store Spot Lite opens in Detroit

A new record store called Spot Lite has opened in Detroit.

Founders Roula David and Jesse Cory have transformed a former storage space to launch the 5,000 square foot store, which also operates as a café, music and art gallery.

At the grand opening, Mayor Mike Duggan said: "I'm not sure a lot of entrepreneurs would have walked into this neighborhood, looked at this building and seen this kind of potential."

Speaking to Metro Times, Roula David said: "Not only was it empty, it did not have heating, electricity, water, or HVAC. The roof was actually collapsing in. The rest of the building was actually in really great shape, but this space was destroyed."

Spot Lite specialises in house, jazz, R&B and soul records, and opens from 10:AM to 11:PM across Wednesday to Sunday, with hours set to be extended to 2:AM when Michigan’s pandemic curfew lifts.

The store, which is located at 2905 Beaufait St. in Detroit’s east side, hosted events during the recent Micro Movement festival in Detroit.
