​New community radio station launches in Bristol, Workshop Radio

A brand new community radio station is primed to launch in Bristol from an “undisclosed location”, according to Bristol 24/7.

Workshop Radio hits the airwaves this month, urging artists to get involved by applying for a show or residency. It asks for DJs, producers, and radio hosts of all levels to submit their genres of interest, sample shows, and any prior experience in radio.

All shows will initially take place live and in-person with an "open door policy", while pre-recorded shows will be “made available in the future”. The location of the studio has not yet been revealed but is based somewhere in the Bishopston area, north of Bristol.

The station is now live with a Mixcloud page and social media accounts, first teasing its launch in December with a video snippet and a caption reading: “Coming soon”.

“If you are a Bristol-based artist with a concept for a show, we would love to hear from you,” reads a follow-up post. “No experience required! We welcome DJs, producers and hosts of all ability level and can provide support to those with less experience.”

The first broadcast from Workshop Radio goes live tomorrow, January 13, coinciding with a launch party. “We're excited to introduce our roster of talented hosts spanning the Bristol dance music scene,” the station announced.

Speaking to Mixmag, the new station explained that "with the recent closure of various local community radio stations, we have recognised the distinct loss in radio opportunity for grassroots artists", pledging to platform those from "underrepresented communities".

"We hope to fill this gap with our DIY station by presenting our hosts via a high-quality audio and video stream, as well as producing an archive of shows to provide them with clips of themselves playing - something we think is especially valuable to less established DJs to better promote themselves."

The launch party line-up currently features a number of DJs from across the Bristol area, including Øphanim, Longeez, DJ Ammi, Joe Koshin, and more. The party is RSVP only, running from 2:PM until 10:PM.

Workshop Radio is headed up by a duo based in Bristol after years in the club scene, per Bristol 24/7. Both artists work in music in the city, from community radio stations to immersive installation events.
