New club M01 from team behind Wilde Renate to open in Berlin

The team behind Berlin clubs Salon zur Wilden Renate and ELSE are set to launch a brand new venue in Friedrichshain this month, M01.

The intimate club will be situated next door to Renate on the club’s north side, with a 400-person capacity across two floors.

Located in east Friedrichshain on Markgrafendamm, M01 is made up of three rooms with a 150-capacity dancefloor on the bottom floor, and two rooms upstairs with spaces to sit, exhibitions, and more.

The second floor of M01 is also set to be fitted with a Lambda Labs soundsystem, and will feature live music acts and installations at set events.

Speaking to Resident Advisor about the new spot, M01’s new booking director Alessandro Boni explained: "While there are plenty of big clubs in Berlin, the city needs small venues for the community of DIY promoters and collectives here.

“We want to allow small, independently funded promoters to curate their own parties without the financial risk of working in larger spaces. So, M01 provides both an intimate setting and a financially viable opportunity to support their ideas."

The club is officially due to open this month, although no set opening date or events have been announced as of yet.

According to M01, the venue will boast a range of genres from house and techno to electro, collaborating with “independent external promoters who share an alternative vision of music and event curation”.

ELSE, the open-air club and sister project of Renate sitting across the street from the main club, has announced a select few names ahead of the summer season. Over the coming months, Estella Boersma, Jamaica Suk, and more are set to play at the outdoor venue.

In October 2020, a former Wilde Renate employee told Mixmag about instances of racism that he was subjected to by colleagues while working at the club. The club published a statement shortly after in response to the allegations, claiming they were "deeply sorry for what happened and for the hurt that was caused."
