“We are huge believers in the UK underground,” say Bristol duo Tommy and Jammo, aka My Nu Leng, who journey through UK bass, trap, grime, garage, techno and house… all within just one hour.
Full of dubstep-tinged drops, their Kahn-collaboration ‘Ruins’ sets the tone from the start. It’s all about the build on this one, as Klient’s ‘Shelter’ merges into RL Grimes’ trap-heavy ‘Scylla’. Then, without warning, Andrew Diggs’ ‘The Ghost VIP’ and Skapes’ ‘Beat On The Drums’ turn the bass up even further.
Elsewhere, the frenetic wobbles of Flava D-collab ‘Soul Shake’ designates it as a massive floor-shaker, Clientele’s ‘She Knows’ moves through classic UK garage territory and Mella Dee’s jungle rumbler ‘Keep On’ naturally rolls into two techno monsters: Woz and Troy Gunner’s ‘Convo’ and Randomer’s thudding ‘Bring’.
The closing third, boasting unreleased material from Jus Now, T Williams and Dismantle, justifies My Nu Leng’s role as tastemakers of the underground. ‘86’ is a fine testament to their rapid ascent.
