Mr G
'Night On The Town' (Phoenix G)
9/10
Colin McBean – veteran of thousands of live performances, both as part of 90s techno overlords The Advent and alone as Mr G – is an unending well-spring of groove.
It's as though every time he switches on his machines, surgically precise bumping rhythms automatically flood out. How else could he be dropping his second album in only eight months with no discernible drop in quality?
'Night On The Town' is a little rawer than Mixmag Album Of The Month 'Personal Momentz', and has a strong feeling of being a series of live jams, but that only adds to its appeal.
Electrical hiss, a bit of distortion, boompty house rhythms and chest-compressing sub-bass: dance music at its very purest.
